To create a site, you must have a domain name and web hosting. But what is a domain name? What is web hosting? Aren’t they the same?

It is important that you are completely clear in their differences before moving on to creating your first site .

What is web hosting?

Web hosting is a computer on which people store their websites. Think of it as a house where you store all your things; but instead of storing clothes and furniture, you store computer files (HTML, documents, images, videos, etc.) in a web host.

Most often, the term “web hosting” refers to a company that rents its computer / servers to store your site and provides an Internet connection so that other users can access the files on your website.

In most cases, these hosting companies will handle server maintenance work, such as backups, root configuration, maintenance, crash recovery, etc.

What is a domain name?

A domain is the address of your site. Before you can set up a website, you will need a domain.

To have a domain name, you need to register it with a domain registrar.

A domain name is not something physical that you can touch or see. This is a string of characters that give your site an identity (yes, a name, both a person and a business). Examples of a domain name are Google.com, Alexa.com, Linux.org, wordpress.com, and Yahoo.com.

All domain names are unique. This means that there can only be one alexa.com in the world. You cannot register a name if it is registered by others ( ICANN ).
